Key PEARL Tables Containing Fish Data

Lake Fish Species Inventory
Checklist of species known to occur in Maine lakes, provided by ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

Fish Stocking (Lakes & Streams): 1989 - Present

Fish Stocking (Lakes): Pre-1989

EMAP Lake Fish Surveys
Data from EPA’s Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program, from 54 Maine lakes selected probabilistically. Fish were sampled with multiple gears and standardized protocols. Surveys occurred between 1992 and 1995. Some lakes were sampled on more than one occasion.

Historical Lake Fish Surveys
Data from the Cooper and Fuller surveys of 205 lakes during the 1930s and 1940s. Most lakes are in southern and central regions of the state.

Influence of Acidity on Lake Fish Distribution
Data from S.J. Pauwels 1985 thesis examining the relationship between fish species and acidity in 22 lakes. This PEARL table includes fish and associated water quality data (pH and aluminum).

Brook Trout Monitoring Study
Electrofishing surveys conducted with standardized methodology, at 60 streams sites. The number of years in each site’s data record ranges from <3 to over 13 years. Data from earlier years include only gamefish species. More recent surveys include entire assemblage data.

Stream Electrofishing Surveys
Data from ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife’s stream survey program. Sampling effort and the degree of focus on non-game species is variable among sites and years. See Brook Trout Monitoring Study for more data collected with standardized protocols.

Atlantic Salmon Fishway Trap Catches
Data from Atlantic Salmon Commission traps on the Penobscot, Narraguagus, Pleasant and Dennys Rivers. Traps are typically operated from May to November and are designed to monitor Atlantic salmon returns to these rivers. This dataset extends from 1978 to the present day.

Atlantic Salmon Rivers: Electrofishing Surveys
Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission’s stream electrofishing survey database. Sampling is conducted with standardized methodology designed to provide population density estimates.

Atlantic Salmon Redds
Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission’s redds database. Redds are the gravel excavations into which salmon deposit their eggs. The number of redds are recorded to monitor inter-annual variations in spawning levels. This dataset extends from 1980 to the present day.
