Abstract

This data set contains fish species checklists for Maine lakes.  The data are updated by MDIFW every 1-2 years.  Data are derived from formal surveys, supplemented by additional sampling and incidental observations.  Survey dates (and total number of surveys) vary among lakes, but this information is not provided in the data source.  However, first and most recent survey dates are available in the MDIFW database (although not shown in this PEARL table).  While abundance data are not available, MDIFW does assign a fisheries "importance" to each species.

Data Fields:  Field Name Unit Description
Water Code MIDAS lake code.
Entity Type Waterbody type.
County Name County in which lake occurs.
Town Name Town in which lake occurs.  In cases where the lake is in more than one town, the given town is the one with the greatest amount of shoreline.
HUC 12 12-digit USGS hydrologic unit code (watershed) in which lake occurs.
Common Name Common name of fish species.
Scientific Name Scientific name of fish species.
Fishery Value Qualitative value assigned by MDIFW to indicate importance to fishery: 1=species present but not abundant enough to provide significant fishery. 2=present as principal fishery. 3=on-going introduction, not yet a viable fishery.
