| Abstract |
Atlantic salmon spawn in late October and early
November. Eggs are fertilized as they are deposited by females in gravel
excavations called redds. The redds may contains multiple egg pits, built
as the female deposits and covers eggs with gravel in sequence moving
upstream. Redd counts are conducted annually in mid-November by
canoeing or walking the rivers. The redds can be observed from a canoe or
shore because the female’s gravel excavations result in clean bright spots
in the substrate. The number and location of redds are recorded. This
PEARL table contains the number of redds recorded for each sampled stream
reach, by year. For conservation purposes, site coordinates are not
provided. Additionally, stream segment codes (NHD code) are only
intended as an approximate spatial identifier for the data, and do not
necessarily correspond to the precise stream segment from which the data
were recorded. |
