| Abstract | The Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission currently uses electrofishing as the primary tool for capturing juvenile Atlantic salmon. Equipment consists mainly of battery powered backpack electrofishing units with some crews using an electrofishing boat for deeper, large river sampling. Population estimates for two life stages (young-of-the-year and parr) are made using multiple run removal techniques. Sites are enclosed with well-anchored seines. Crews electrofish the site from the downstream boundary, working upstream in methodical, back and forth patterns, capturing and holding all juveniles encountered. This “pass” is continued until the top of the site is reached and the catch is tabulated. The numbers of passes required for a statistically usable estimate are determined by the catch per run. Typically, estimates are possible using two or three runs. | |
